contest winner, sonner #2 by Alan S Jeeves
Rain and You Sonnet Number 2 by Alan S Jeeves is not a sonnet. A sonnet is 14 lines of iambic pentameter with a definite rhyme scheme. There are many styles of sonnet, but all have that basic structure. There are variations, such as writing "extended sonnets" in which one combines two or more sonnets to make a complete poem, but these are a largely modern conception. I could send you some examples of sonnets I wrote recently if you need to understand how they work. They are modified Petrarchan (octet rhymes abbaabba, but sestet rhymes ccddee.) They are acrostic sonnets. Shakespeare is credited with inventing his own style (though there is debate as to whether or net he actually invented it). It has three quatrains followed by a rhymed couplet. (I could send you one I wrote a while ago, but, Hell, you might as well go visit the Bard himself to see how they work.)
Hope you are all having nice Christmas or whatever you celebrate at this time of Saturnalia. Cheers, and bottoms up!
